Common Tree Planting Mistakes

Tree planting and landscaping have become an everyday activity in Daly City as new home constructions are happening every day. Trees add to the appeal of the home. And when planted in the right way and at the right place, you can enjoy their benefits for many years to come. However, most homeowners do not know about tree planting and tree care. Therefore, it’s not news to see many homeowners make these tree planting mistakes that they may bear the costs in the coming years.

Wrong location

A higher percentage of homeowners overlook this factor while growing their trees. They plant a tree anywhere they think it will look great. A huge mistake! Know what the trees need to thrive. While some trees need full sun to thrive, others need a little shade.

Trees that need the most water will mostly do poorly if planted in a high drainage area. Similarly, trees that require the least water will suffer if grown in flooding zones.

Planting too deep

Whether the tree is ball and burlap or containerized, there is always excess soil on the tree root that you should remove. Once removed, you can quickly determine the height and dig the right size of a planting hole. But many homeowners do not know they need to remove the excess soil and determine the right size of the hole. They end up digging too deep. Studies have shown that more than 90% of professionally planted trees were planted with this mistake.

If your tree’s flare is covered too deep, your tree may suffer from reduced growth, insufficient oxygen, yellowing of leaves, and even death.

Too small hole

There will always be soil compaction cases around new constructions. If you dig too small holes for your trees, especially the same width as your root ball, you will just be adding stress to your tree. Tree roots find it hard to grow in compacted

soils. When you dig a small hole in clay soils, the soils will become a water bowl, keep the water with their low drainage properties, and kill your tree after some time.

Since trees planted in such conditions do not develop a strong root system, they easily get blown away by storms.

Inappropriate watering

More trees die due to overwatering than lack of water. This shows how little informed about proper watering homeowners can be. Overwatering your trees in clay soils can suffocate your trees to death. During summer, your tree can dry in hot weather when improperly watered.

The proper watering should be slow. Deep and infrequent. Also, focus on the type of soil your tree is growing in. Clay soil needs longer watering intervals to allow the soil to absorb the water. Sandy soils, on the other hand, need shorter watering intervals.
